Weekend Trip to PingLing and C.K.S.

I went with my fiancee and her family into the mountains outside of Taipei City. We went to a place called PingLing which is famous for their production of Oolong Tea. On our way back from PingLing we stopped at Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial hall to let the kids feed the Koi fish. The picture with the circles and leaves are tea leaves being dried on the street.

Return to Taiwan and Typhoon Morakat

After spending some time painting in the United States I have now returned to Taiwan. I am currently jet lagged and have been struggling to stay awake all day. I keep waking up at 3:30 a.m. I completed two still life oil paintings yesterday along with preparing a large amount of painting panels.

I didn't go outside to paint yesterday because the clouds were indicating rain and I didn't want to get caught out in a downpour. My girlfriend and I were caught in a torrential downpour on Wednesday after going to the art store to pick up turpentine and other supplies that I couldn't bring with me on my flight. The rain was so heavy that the street flooded within 10 minutes and my girlfriend almost lost her sandals in a two foot deep current that was flowing to the street drains. I am glad that I didn't take my scooter to the art store and instead opted for the city bus. The one thing we don't need any more of is rain especially after Typhoon Morakat.

Typhoon Morakat has caused extensive damage in the Central and Southern regions of Taiwan. According to the Taiwan news this typhoon has caused the most damage of any typhoon in the last 50 years. The damage is increasing because it is still raining here. It is practically impossible for rescue workers to evacuate people because the roads are washed out from mudslides. The only solution is to use helicopters to evacuate people. However, people should have been evacuated earlier, especially after the typhoon was observed to be moving very slowly. When a typhoon moves very slowly here it causes the most damage because of the significant amount of rain that accumulates in a short period of time.

Thankfully, my girlfriend and her family are ok and everything in Taipei is ok. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of the victims of this horrible disaster. I hope that the rain finally lets up so that further damage is prevented.
